Port Townsend- Fort Worden State Park
May 4th, 2011
Fort Worden State park is located at the northern most tip of Port Townsend. Minutes away from the this charming seaside town is an old military site worthy of an afternoon of exploration. You can find the trailhead from the RV camping parking lot with a little bit of searching.
In the 1890s Fort Worden was built as part of the "triangle of fire"
along with Fort Flager, and Fort Casey. The intention was to create a
large gun defense against any sea invasion at the entrance to the Puget
Sound. No shots were actually ever fired and during WWI all of the
artillery was sent to Europe. The base later turned into a training
ground for the first half of the century until in 1957 the grounds were
turned into a Juvenille detention center. In 1971 the land was
transferred to the Washington Parks and Recreation Commission and in
1973 Fort Worden Stat Park was opened to the public.
